Obama Girls Get Vaccine for Swine Flu

The Obama girls have received the swine flu vaccinations, according to a post this afternoon on the White House blog. According to the blog, the president and the first lady have not received the H1N1 vaccine, and they will wait until the “needs of the priority groups” –- which includes young people, pregnant women and people with underlying illnesses, such as asthma –- have been vaccinated. But because of their ages, Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, are in the priority groups. The Centers for Disease Control’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that all children between 6 months and 18 years be vaccinated against H1N1 “as soon as possible.” The Obama girls received their shots last week from the White House physician “who applied for and received the vaccine from the DC Department of Health using the same process as every other vaccination site in the District.” All four members of the Obama family have received the seasonal flu vaccine.

Given the difficulty of obtaining the vaccine, the girls’ access might raise eyebrows in some quarters, but letting the public know that the president’s daughters have been vaccinated could assuage the fears of parents who are wary about the new vaccine. According to a recent Associated Press poll, despite reassurances from the CDC, more than 70 percent of American parents are concerned about the vaccination’s possible side effects.

And although the availability of the vaccine has fallen far short of predictions, U.S. Health officials announced that more than 22 million doses of swine flu vaccine are available now, and most Americans should soon find it easier to get their dose. “We’re beginning to get to significant increases in the availability,” said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at a briefing. On Friday President Obama signed a proclamation declaring H1N1 a national emergency.

So, if the White House doctor doesn’t make it to your house, what do you do? We’ve all seen the lines of people waiting on the TV reports, and the information seems to be shifting frequently. But the vaccines are definitely available for priority groups — just be prepared for those lines. According to Forbes.com, in Washington, D.C., “there are 57 doses per 1,000 residents — the highest concentration in the country.” Maryland and Virginia each have 41 doses per 1,000 residents — putting them more in the middle. Please note that Montgomery County has the nasal spray version only — no injectables at this time — and there will be 1,000 doses only at each site. You will also not be allowed on the property of the school where the clinic is housed until a half an hour before the clinic opens.

So why you are waiting for your Vaccine for Swine Flu we reccommend taking percautions.

Rice Krispies Are No Substitute For Swine Flu Vaccine

Cereal giant Kellogg said it’s dropping the eyebrow-raising claim that a box of Rice Krispies or Cocoa Krispies, “Now helps support your child’s IMMUNITY.” (The caps are Kellogg’s.)

Blame the swine flu. Kellogg’s said Wednesday it is discontinuing the IMMUNITY claim, “given the public attention on H1N1.”

The decision also follows a pullback by a controversial industry-sponsored program that put “Smart Choices” labels on the front of packages of processed foods, including some of Kelloggs’. Only days before that change, the Food and Drug Administration raised concerns those labels could mislead consumers.

The immunity claim for the two varieties of Krispies drew a lot of fire. The San Francisco city attorney challenged Kellogg last week to prove its claim, USA Today reported.

Though conceding, Kellogg didn’t admit complete defeat. The company stands by its claim that the amount of vitamins A, B, C and E found in the cereal are proven by “science” to help support the immune system.

But health guru Marion Nestle of New York University says that’s hooey. “Yes, these nutrients are involved in immunity, but I can’t think of a nutrient that isn’t involved in the immune system,” she told USA Today.

On her blog, Nestle called Kellogg’s rowback “wise,” but noted that it’s cases like this that prove “in the absence of FDA action, food marketing is allowed to run rampant.”
